July 2005 GCAA Newsletter

 THE G-CAA IS BACK!!!: After a 3-year hiatus, the Greenridge-Coldwater Area Association has been resurrected! We welcome your participation and membership in this voluntary homes association. The G-CAA domain includes 535 homes on Coldwater Drive, Greenridge Road, Highwood Road, Shadow Ridge Drive, and the courts and connecting streets off of these streets.

 G-CAA ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP: Our annual membership drive is now underway. Dues are $15 for the year (July ’05 through June ‘06). Please submit your dues, along with the G-CAA Membership Form, in the enclosed envelope. We feel the G-CAA provides a valuable service to our community, and we encourage you to become members. Your membership dues fund many services that improve the quality of life in our community, including the following:

Landscaping and maintenance of the Greenridge gateway to our neighborhood. Note: The Coldwater gateway is in the Crow Creek watershed and is not accessible to us.
G-CAA Representative attends Municipal Advisory Council (MAC), County Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, and other miscellaneous meetings with agenda items that affect our neighborhood and surrounding area.
 Monitor legislation that affects our community.
 Monitor neighborhood compliance with the county’s General Ordinance Code: www.co.alameda.ca.us/admin/admincode/Alameda_County_General_Ordinance_Code/index.html
 Annual Picnic.
 Annual Holiday Party.
 Supply Greenridge Park with “Pooper Scoopers”.
 Financial contributions to the Castro Valley Library.
 Quarterly newsletter.
 Website.
 Clearing house for information of interest to the community.

 G-CAA Picnic & General Meeting: Back by popular demand, the G-CAA will have a picnic/general meeting at Greenridge Park on Saturday, July 23rd at 12:00pm. Come to meet and greet your neighbors and find out what’s going on in the neighborhood. The G-CAA will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and condiments. Please bring a side dish or drinks to share with your friends and neighbors. Please RSVP to Rose Clowry by Wednesday, July 20th to let her know how many people will attend and what you’re bringing. You may email her at rkyrose@aol.com or call her at (510) 886-8536.

 G-CAA WEBSITE: A website has been established for the G-CAA: www.g-caa.org. We will continue to build out the site with more information of interest to the community. If you have anything to contribute, please notify a G-CAA board member. Currently there is a Message Board on the site that you are free to use once you register on the site. One use of this is to post referrals to contractors for home remodeling projects.

 G-CAA MAILING LIST: Our mailing list is 3 years old, and we apologize if your name is incorrect on the mailing label to this newsletter. Please notify us with any corrections. Just send an email message to GCAA@bigfoot.com or contact Zelda Penton at 886-0889. Thanks for your help!

 BOOKMOBILE LIBRARY ON WHEELS: Are you aware that the Alameda County Bookmobile visits our neighborhood? The Library on Wheels makes a stop at Lomond Way near the Greenridge Road intersection every other Wednesday from 5:25 to 5:50 pm. Here are some details of the service:
 The Bookmobile is a library on wheels with books, magazines, CDs, videos, and other materials for children, young adults, and adults.
 Library materials are checked out for two weeks and may be returned to the Bookmobile or to any branch of the Alameda County Library.
 Books and other materials not on the Bookmobile may be reserved. Log on to www.aclibrary.org and order materials delivered to the Bookmobile for pick-up. Or call the Bookmobile office: 745-1477.
 For more info go to: www.aclibrary.org/branches/bkm/bookmobilehome.asp

 DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR?: Robert Hughes is a software pioneer! Robert was a mathematical programmer/computer scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1954 until his retirement in 1988. In 1956, Robert was sent to IBM’s lab in New York to help develop a programming language for the IBM 704, the most powerful computer of its day. The team developed the FORTRAN programming language. The original FORTRAN manual lists four contributors – one of them Robert Hughes! Robert and his wife, Barbara, are original Greenridge homeowners and moved into their Eichler on May 1, 1961.

The G-CAA neighborhood is fortunate to have a number of interesting residents. If you know of a neighbor with an interesting past or claim to fame that is of interest to the community, please notify Dennis Hermosa (886-0793 or GCAA@bigfoot.com).

 G-CAA PROJECTS: We welcome your ideas and suggestions for projects beneficial to the community in which the G-CAA can participate. Please use the attached G-CAA Membership Form to submit your ideas. For example, one suggestion is to have a volunteer day to help do yard work for neighbors who have trouble getting around.

 FREE TRASH PICKUP SERVICE: The G-CAA Board encourages residents to take advantage of the Castro Valley Sanitary District’s (www.cvsan.org) On-Call Bulky Pickup program. Residents can dispose non-hazardous materials up to:

 2 cubic yards of refuse
 4 tires
 3 large appliances
 3 large furniture items
 tree prunings

These items will be picked up at the curb by appointment only. This is a free, once-a-year service that can be arranged by calling Waste Management at 537-5500. So if you have not already used this service in the 2005 calendar year, you are entitled to a pickup. For more info, see www.cvsan.org/recycling.htm
For hazardous materials, contact the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste facility at
1-800-606-6606 or go to www.stopwaste.org

 BURGLARIES: Our neighborhood has not been immune to the rise in residence burglaries in Castro Valley. Please report all burglaries and incidents of vandalism to the Sheriff’s Department. Also, please notify a G-CAA board member so we can be aware of the magnitude of these incidents. Meanwhile, the G-CAA is researching group discounts with home security vendors and we will share our findings at the C-CAA picnic/general meeting.

 WELCOME COMMITTEE: If you have a new neighbor, please alert a G-CAA Board Member. We would like to welcome new neighbors and provide them with information regarding the neighborhood and community. If you are a gardener and would like to donate some potted plants to be used as welcome gifts, please notify Carmen Rivers (581-3581) or Elsie Dep (582-3118).
